What is BHB?

β-Hydroxybutyric acid, also known as beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is an organic compound synthesized in the liver from acetoacetate. Normally, the compound can be used as an energy source by the brain, organs, and other tissues when blood glucose is low. But thanks to advancements in technology, ketone levels can be elevated through supplementation of BHB.

BHB is a naturally occurring molecule prevalent in times of starvation. Created by the liver, out of the need to survive and taken up by the brain, as a last ditch effort to supply fuel for the most important organ in our body. Our use of it today—in supplement form—is to hijack a mechanism of natural selection and use it for superior human performance.

Ketones can meet about 50% of your body’s energy needs. It can cross over into your brain by passing through the blood-brain barrier and feed about two-thirds of your brain’s energy needs when required.

“The metabolic actions of ketone bodies are based on sound evolutionary principles to prolong survival during caloric deprivation. By harnessing the potential of these metabolic actions during exercise, athletic performance could be influenced” - Acute nutritional ketosis: implications for exercise performance Cox et al 2014/10/29

Not all BHB is created equal. Most forms of BHB that are sold today are what are referred to as a "racemic" mixture or a combination of right and left handed molecules. BLK UMB BHB contains only the chiral version of the molecules which have been shown to be 50-60% more potent. Other companies are also quick to limit the sodium content and instead bind their BHB to calcium and potassium, which in high doses may be unsafe. The high amount of calcium also leads  to absorption problems not to mention puts users at risk of heart problems associated with high intake of calcium. BLK UMB BHB uses only a sodium salt bound to a chiral molecule for the most effective ketone on the market.

do I have to change my diet?

A common fallacy about supplementing with BHB is the notion that you have to also buy into a ketogenic diet and lifestyle. This is patently false, in fact, BHB can almost eliminate the general population's need to eat a ketogenic diet. We suggest taking advantage of the native human adaptive abilities of metabolic flexibility. This refers to the body's ability to use multiple fuel substrates for different efforts. BHB makes this not only easier, but actually plausible. Without the use of BHB or exogenous ketone supplementation, the body cannot create a high enough amount of ketone bodies without the use of severe fasting or extreme carbohydrate restriction, which has the side effect of long adaptation times (2-3 weeks) and limited performance for lack of proper glycogen storage. BLK UMB BHB can elevate blood ketones to therapeutic levels in less than 60-minutes, even in the presence of carbohydrate! This takes advantage of the brain's preference of ketones as a fuel source, which can then elevate the stress of fuel most of the brain on carbohydrate, and keep glycogen stores for use by other more demanding tissues.
